Identifying Problems That Cause Disproportionality in Special Education: Training Modules

This series of modules comprises a data-driven investigation to identify the problems causing disproportionate placement of racially diverse students in special education.  It provides a systematic approach for arriving at root causes of disproportionality.  The series is comprised of five six-hour training workshops that support school districts or district membership team on how to: (a) interpret referral and disproportionality data; (b) analyze the impact of community demographics and student achievement; (c) examine school practices, policies and beliefs; (d) weigh current research, and (e) arrive at root cause.  Click on Year One for these modules.  Each includes a Trainerâ?s Manual and various materials for use in workshops.   Click on Year Two for a series of  modules on culturally responsive professional development -- which is part of the solution.   (The Technical Assistance Center on Disproportionality is a project of the Metropolitan Center for Urban Education at the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, New York University.  The project is contracted through the New York State Department of Education but the materials could be adapted for other locations.)
