The Building the Legacy training curriculum was produced by NICHCY at the request of the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) at the U.S. Department of Education. The curriculum is intended to assist in understanding and implementation of the IDEA 2004 and its Part B regulations (published in 2006).
Each individual module includes:
â?¢ a slideshow for trainers to use;
â?¢ a Trainer's Guide explaining how the slides work as well as the content of the slides; and
â?¢ handouts for participants.
Many modules are available in both English and Spanish, and all handouts for participants are available in both languages. This means that, even if the slideshow and Trainer's Guide for a module are available only in English, trainers will have Spanish-language handouts that they can share with Spanish-speaking audience members, as need be.
The modules are available in the following formats: Print (PDF, MS Word); Powerpoint; a CD with all of the English materials is available while supplies last (write to NICHCY, or call, to request with a copy)
The training curriculum has five overarching themes with multiple training modules beneath each theme. There are a total of 19 modules (Note: Modules 3 and 4 are not available - those two modules have been postponed, pending reauthorization of NCLB).
Theme A: Welcome to IDEA | ¡Bienvenido a IDEA!
Take a broad look at IDEA 2004 with these 2 modules--the first welcomes newcomers to IDEA and the second identifies what's different in the 2004 reauthorization of the law.
â?¢ Module 1 | Top 10 Basics of Special Education
â?¢ Module 2 | Key Changes in the Law and Regulations
Theme B: IDEA and General Education | IDEA y la Educación General
See how IDEA aligns with No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and explore topics on general education and children with disabilities.
â?¢ Module 5 | Disproportionality and Overrepresentation
â?¢ Module 6 | Early Intervening Services and Response to Intervention
â?¢ Module 7 | Highly Qualified Teachers
â?¢ Module 8 | NIMAS
Theme C: Evaluating Children for Disability | Las Evaluaciones Bajo IDEA
When children are struggling in school, the possibility exists that they may have a disability. The 3 modules in Theme C look at the evaluation process under IDEA, which is intended to determine if, indeed, there is a disability affecting a child's school progress and, if so, whether the child needs special education and related services.
â?¢ Module 9 | Introduction to Evaluation
â?¢ Module 10 | Initial Evaluation and Reevaluation
â?¢ Module 11 | Identification of Children with Specific Learning Disabilities
Theme D: Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) | Los Programas Educativos Individualizados
The IEP is the cornerstone in the education of every child with a disability. Learn about everything IEP and more!

â?¢ Module 13 | Content of the IEP
â?¢ Module 14 | Meetings of the IEP Team
â?¢ Module 15 | LRE Decision Making

â?¢ Module 18 | Options for Dispute Resolution
â?¢ Module 19 | IDEA's Discipline Provisions
